On Friday, October 29th, Bishop Gorman will induct four new members into the Crusaders Athletic Hall of Fame. Bishop Gorman is proud and honored to announce George Cumby (Class of 1975) will be one of the members of the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2021. As a student at Bishop Gorman, George Cumby earned All State honors on the football field and would continue his education and football career at The University of Oklahoma. The hard-hitting linebacker was a standout for the Crusaders and an All-American for the Sooners. He played for OU from 1976 to 1979, where he was a three-time first-team All-American (1977, 1978, 1979). Cumby, with a combination of speed and strength, is considered one of the top defensive players of all time at Oklahoma. He was named the Defensive Newcomer of the Year and Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year twice, in 1978 and 1979. He finished his career at Oklahoma with 405 career tackles, fifth on the all-time list. Cumby was taken in the first round by the Green Bay Packers in the 1980 NFL Draft as the 26th overall pick. He played in the NFL until 1987. Cumby was named All-Pro in 1982. He played the majority of his NFL career with the Packers, but also was a member of the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. Cumby is currently an assistant football coach for Bishop Gorman. The Hall of Fame Luncheon is set for 11:30 a.m. on October 29th at Rick’s On the Square in Tyler. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.bishopgorman.net/athletics/tickets.

After a successful first half at the middle school football game, BG alumnus Lucas Vega ('19) encouraged the Crusaders to "keep your foot on the gas." And they did! What a blessing for our current students to interact with and be mentored by our enthusiastic alumni!

Would you risk your life to save a book? This question was posed to our BG student journalists at The Book Smugglers exhibit at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum where they learned about the role of the Paper Brigade in rescuing rare books, manuscripts, and works of art from the Nazis during World War II.

Dr. Stewart's AP and Honors English Literature and Composition classes read several primary texts for summer reading, including Homer's Iliad. Students were invited to submit creative projects based on the epic, which resulted in video reenactments, golden apples, and homemade pitas and hummus!

#ThrowbackThursday On this, the anniversary of the opening of our school on September 2, 1958, we remember the men and women who answered the call to build a Catholic high school in Tyler. Their generous dedication and donations to the successful campaign have enabled thousands of East Texas students to receive an exemplary education grounded in the teachings of the Catholic church. For each and every one of them, the Crusader community is profoundly grateful. #TBT

Today Bishop Strickland celebrated our first all school Mass at the Chapel of Sts. Peter and Paul. What a blessing it was to gather together to worship and pray and to be reminded that Jesus is the Cornerstone.

Look who's been spotted lending her expertise to the middle school volleyball team -- none other than Kaye Fackrell, the 2000 TAPPS 3A Female Coach of the Year and science teacher extraordinaire! Coach Fackrell coached her Lady Cru volleyball teams to great success at the state level, and her assistant coach was yet another beloved member of the BG family -- Mary Schick, our principal and science teacher. There must be a science to volleyball!
